week update 8

This week I am loving…

My new Orla Kierly bike panniers and basket. I’ve been looking for panniers for my bike since my birthday and hadn’t managed to find any I liked. They were all too girly, or just too boring. These ones are absolutely perfect. Now all I have to worry about is that someone is going to come and nick them.

This week I’m pleased…

That I’ve started learning to drive again. Even if this means having regular lessons in London. I had started when I had five weeks off work in May, but I was learning to drive in Lichfield which is a completely different situation to learning to drive in London. London is a completely different ballpark. My driving instructor keeps reminding me that if I can drive in London I can probably drive anywhere, but it’s hard to keep thinking that in my head when all I can think about is that I’m probably going to end up running over a Boris biking tourist.

I’ve booked my driving test now anyway, so it’s something that has to be done.

This week I’m hating…

Red wine. I went out with a couple of friends last Friday night and a few bottles of red wine later I came home in a bit of a state. I actually haven’t had a hangover that bad since I was at Uni. Yes, I know people who moan about hangovers are the worst, but this one has to be documented because it was just so horrific. I spent all of Saturday doing absolutely nothing and feeling very sorry for myself.

This week I’m worried…

About how I’m going to fill my time. My job is pretty dull at the best of times, but now it’s recess in the Houses of Parliament so the MPs aren’t here, plus my job revolves around the policy side of things anyway and things are notoriously slow when the House isn’t sitting. It’s a bit like the school summer holidays, we wear our own clothes and our working hours are relaxed but still. What do I do to fill the time?

This week I’m grateful…

Because despite the above, I went to the Houses of Parliament crypt this afternoon and visited the cupboard where Emily Davison hid the night before the 1911 census. Without women doing things like that all those years ago, I wouldn’t have the job I have now. Girls like me being able to do the job I do would have been completely alien to them.

This week I’m relieved…

Because I went to the doctors to get a referral for therapy. I’ve always struggled with the thought that I might have anxiety because I’m not sure I believed it was a real thing. You’re just shy, right? Ha, how wrong I was. I’ve gone from being shy to being completely unable to do anything alone unless I just happen to be having a good day. It’s started to hold me back at work, and while I’m desperate for a new job, I don’t think I’ll be able to find one until I start battling some demons.

Once I’d accepted that anxiety is real, I plucked up the courage to see the doctor who immediately referred me for talking therapy and said “I’m really glad you came to see me”. It’s like a massive weight has been lifted. If you feel like you need to do it, then just do it.

This week I’m nervous…

Because I’m going to a new book club tomorrow and we’re talking about the Handmaid’s Tale.

Which I haven’t managed to finish.

Which I’m kicking myself over how stupid I am for not finishing.

Seriously, if anyone knows anything about the Handmaid’s Tale then do let me know. Currently, I feel like I’m about to take a GCSE I haven’t revised for.

This week I’m perfecting…

How to make my hair nice and wavy. I have wavy hair naturally but it’s big, it’s kinky and it’s usually a mess. I really want to try and get loose wavy curls perfected, but so far I’ve been wandering around in different states of lion mane messes. Oh, and watching a thousand and one YouTube tutorials on it. How do they all make it look so easy?!

What have you been up to this week?

I loved the Handmaiden’ Tale however unfortunately cannot recall too much (and definitely nothing to contribute to an intellectual discussion). Just go in and tell them you didn’t finish it (honestly if life gets in the way then it just does!). How many meetings for the book club have you been to?

A lot of Youtubers spend time on their daily which I certainly don’t do at all! Have you tried overnight methods?

Best of luck for driving!! And also for taking the next step for your mental health

I’ve only been to one! I read all the analysis notes so that got me through but maybe in future honesty would be the best policy!

      I haven’t! I probably should!

Thank you – that’s really kind.

Your driving instructor told the similar thing to me too! But the case was in my own city, “If you could drive in Jakarta, you could drive anywhere else!” but good luck for the driving ! 🙂

Oh gosh! I can only imagine Jakarta being a lot worse than London!

Ahhh I still haven’t read Handmaid’s Tale, or watched the TV show, and now everyone’s talking about it and I feel awkward. I probably should just…read and watch, really! Well done on the doctors trip – it’s such a big step you’ve taken, and you should feel proud of yourself!

I liked the book but it definitely won’t be one of my favourites ever! I think you should read it if you get the chance, it was quite thought provoking and it doesn’t take all that long to read! The TV show is meant to be really good, but not very easy watching! I haven’t got around to it either!
